Transient elevations in systolic blood pressure occur as normal adaptations during fever, physical exertion, and emotional upset, such as during anger and fear. Persistent hypertension, or high blood pressure, is common in obese people because the total length of their blood vessels is relatively greater than that in thinner individuals.

Although hypertension is usually asymptomatic for the first 10 to 20 years, it slowly but surely strains the heart and damages the arteries. For this reason, hypertension is often called the “silent killer”. Prolonged hypertension accelerates arteriosclerosis and is the major cause of heart failure, vascular disease, renal failure, and stroke. Because the heart is forced to pump against greater resistance, it must work harder, and in time the myocardium enlarges. When finally strained beyond its capacity to respond, the heart weakens and its walls become flabby. Advanced warning signs include headache, sweating, rapid pulse, shortness of breath, dizziness, and vision disturbances.

Hypertension also ravages blood vessels, causing small tears in the endothelium and increasing the demand for energy in countering the excessive mechanical load on the arterial vessels – this accelerates the progress of atherosclerosis. Furthermore, a stretched muscle cell accumulates more lipid than a relaxed muscle, further enhancing this metabolic and morphological change in cells and tissues. As the vessels become increasingly blocked, blood flow to the tissues becomes inadequate, and vascular complications begin to appear in vessels of the brain, heart, kidneys, and retinas of the eyes.

Systolic or pumping pressure, the higher of the two is normally around 120 in a healthy adult and the lower diastolic about 70, normally expressed as 120/70. 130/80 is average for a 40 yr old NZ male, 117/75 for a 40 yr old female. Hypertension is defined physiologically as a condition of sustained elevated arterial pressure of 140/90 or higher (which is dangerously high), and the higher the blood pressure, the greater the risk for serious cardiovascular problems. As a rule, elevated diastolic pressures are more significant medically, because they always indicate progressive occlusion and/or hardening of the arterial tree.

About 90% of hypertensive people have primary, or essential, hypertension, in which no underlying cause has been identified by their doctor. The following factors are believed to be involved:

1. Diet. Dietary factors that contribute to hypertension include excessive use of table salt, saturated fat, and cholesterol intake and deficiencies in certain metal ions (Potassium, Calcium and Magnesium).

2. Obesity.

3. Age. Clinical signs of the disease usually appear after age 40.

4. Race. More blacks than whites are hypertensive, and the course of the disease also varies in different population groups.

5. Heredity. Hypertension runs in families. Children of hypertensive parents are twice as likely to develop hypertension as are children of normotensive parents.

6. Stress. Particularly at risk are “hot reactors”, people whose blood pressure zooms upward during every stressful event.

7. Smoking. Nicotine enhances the sympathetic nervous system’s vasoconstrictor effects.

According to allopathy primary hypertension cannot be cured, but most cases can be controlled by restricting salt, fat, and cholesterol intake, losing weight, stopping smoking, managing stress, and taking antihypertensive drugs. Drugs commonly used are diuretics, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, and ACE inhibitors (drugs that inhibit the renin-angiotensin mechanism by inhibiting angiotensin-converting enzyme).

Secondary hypertension, which accounts for 10% of cases, is due to identifiable disorders, such as excessive renin secretin by the kidneys, arteriosclerosis, and endocrine disorders such as hyperthyroidism and Cushing’s disease. Treatment for secondary hypertension is directed toward correcting the causative problem.

20% of New Zealanders suffer from high blood pressure. Men over 35 and women over 45 should have their blood pressure checked every few years. Blood pressure results can be influenced up to 50% by temporary factors such as mood, and what one has eaten and drunk. For a correct reading take blood pressure 4-5 hours after food and never when stressed, upset or emotional. Apparently, a reading may also be altered when the kidneys are acting as the primary filtering system as opposed to the liver. If you have high blood pressure, regular monitoring is essential.

Contributing factors include high sodium intake, food sensitivities, stress, toxic chemical exposure, caffeine consumption, use of recreational drugs, cadmium and lead toxicity, smoking, and a low fibre intake.

Eliminate all junk food, alcohol, tea, coffee, sugar (can cause high blood pressure, especially if the person is lacking in Chromium), food coloring and preserved foods. MSG, baking soda, canned vegetables, commercially prepared foods, over-the-counter medications that contain ibuprofen, diet soft drinks, foods with mold inhibitors, preservatives and most sugar substitutes, meat tenderizers, softened water, and soy sauce need to be avoided. These products can cause the cells to swell and interfere with the effectiveness of diuretics in the treatment of hypertension. Increase the consumption of Potassium containing foods e.g. green vegetables, whole grains, dried fruit, bananas, grapes, peaches, plums, pumpkin, squash, potatoes, beets, brewer’s yeast, zucchini, legumes, sprouts, seeds and vegetable juices.

Arginine is a powerful stimulator of nitric oxide (NO). NO is required for the smooth muscle of the blood vessels to relax. The stress release of adrenalin raises blood pressure. Tryptophan can modify this stress response. The amino acid Histidine can also blunt the effect of adrenalin on the vascular system.

Subnormal activity of the Sodium/Potassium pump appears to be a common feature of primary hypertension and is stimulated by insulin, thyroid hormone, Taurine and Potassium. Magnesium and Quercetin also help maintain cellular electrolyte imbalance.

Lowering blood pressure is important, however elevated insulin, glucose and lipid levels must also be addressed. Lecithin granules in the diet will assist with lipid management and Cholesterol Balance by Radiance is helpful in balancing cholesterol levels. Chromium will help moderate blood sugar levels. Taurine and Methionine levels are low in hypertensive patients. Taurine lowers BP in its own right through aldosterone regulation (suppresses renin-angiotensin feedback) and facilitates the metabolism of Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium and Selenium. It also lowers heavy metal concentration. Taurine (2 g/day) should be given.

Vitamin C and Bioflavonoids strengthens blood vessel walls at 1000mg 3 times daily. Also just 1000 mg a day lowers LDL’s by 10% and blood lipids by 40%, lowering blood pressure. Niacin, Betaine hydrochloride, Vitamin E (200 IU) and Fish oils reduce blood viscosity and hence blood pressure. Taurine, Coenzyme Q10, and Lipoic acid supplementation results in a significant drop in blood pressure. Many studies have demonstrated the ability of Coenzyme Q10 to reduce blood pressure in hypertension patients. Coenzyme Q10 lowers blood pressure when taken over a long period of time. Therapeutic dosage is 60mg 3 times daily. Vitamin D supplementation in women significantly drops blood pressure. Copper supplementation may lower blood cholesterol. Increase Vitamin B6 intake. Vitamin B6 inhibits platelet aggregation and relieves edema. Too little Manganese, and Vitamin B3, has been linked to high blood pressure also.

Fish oils lower serum lipids. Therefore fish intake should be increased to at least 4 times a week. Otherwise a GLA/EFA should be used on salads etc. Fish oils depress the vascular response to agents that promote contraction. Increase calcium intake to 1000 mg/day (500mg twice daily). Calcium is a natural tranquilizer which may explain its role in lowering blood pressure. In one study of 4000 hypertensive patients, 85% dropped their blood pressure to safe levels by doubling their Calcium intake. Use calcium citrate, aspartate and orotate. Studies have shown Magnesium deficiency to be endemic to western society. Reversible hypertension is a clinical finding in hypomagnesemia and magnesium depletion; 50% of magnesium-depleted patients are hypertensive and their blood pressure returns to normal with supplementation. Magnesium regulates muscle tension through a combination of muscle physiology and neurophysiology, correcting excessive excitation, inflammation and energetic dysfunction due to insulin resistance. Magnesium lowers blood pressure, as it is a vasodilator – arterial vasospasm is a major contributor to hypertension and sudden heart attacks. It also acts as a calcium channel regulator. It normalizes heart rhythm, and reduces plasma triglycerides and lipid precipitation on blood vessel walls. Take 500 mg twice daily.

Use a high Potassium salt substitute or Celtic sea salt. A Californian biochemist, Dr Jacques de Langre, has spent 35 years researching the health benefits of sea salt. He claims that a low-salt diet for the treatment of high blood pressure is based on dogma, not evidence and a salt-restrictive diet can actually raise blood pressure. He believes refined table salt is a toxin to the body, yet unrefined Celtic sea salt is extremely healthy and may actually lower blood pressure. Potassium supplementation would be 300-600 mg daily. Excess salt itself does not normally raise blood pressure if Potassium and Calcium intake is increased also, or surprisingly, if non-chloride forms of Sodium are used. Excess Sodium is eventually expelled from our bodies, but can take valuable Potassium and Calcium along with it, often resulting in a Potassium or Calcium deficiency, both of which are major causes of high blood pressure. Potassium excretion is also increased by excess sugar, and tea, coffee and alcohol.

Insulin resistance is a major contributor to cardiovascular illness. Check for hypothyroidism. If present supplement with Selenium, Tyrosine, Iodine, Copper and Zinc.

The herb Cayenne along with Garlic will lower blood pressure. Garlic improves circulation as well as reducing cholesterol and fats in the blood. Take 4,000 mcg standardized allicin extract 3 times daily. You could use these herbs in cooking also. Hawthorn berries (1.8% vitexinn-4′rhamnoside) help to strengthen the heart muscle by increasing blood flow to the heart, thereby improving heart contractions, and reduces blood pressure by reducing resistance in the arteries. Take 250 mg 3 times daily. Combination Cayenne-Garlic-Hawthorn Formula by Nature’s Way is blended specifically for high blood pressure.

Ginkgo (24% standardized extract) improves circulation throughout the cardiovascular system and has anti-platelet as well as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Dandelion leaf acts as a mild diuretic so that excess fluids are excreted. Take 1 125mg capsule or 30 drops 3 times daily. Other useful herbs that have a diuretic action include Uva Ursi, Juniper berry, Cranberry and Parsley. Motherwort, Lime Blossom, Valerian, Skullcap, Lemon Balm, Kava, and Chamomile are useful herbs to add to a hypertensive prescription as they work on the nervous system to calm and soothe. Suma herb tea, 3 cups daily, has been reported to be beneficial for high blood pressure.

Reishi increases coronary blood flow. Asian clinical studies have shown it to be effective as a calmative in anxiety and hypertension, and for reducing blood pressure. Dosage is 3000 mg 3 times daily. Du Zhong is a herb from Traditional Chinese Medicine used for dizziness and light-headedness due to hypertension from “rising liver yang”.

A bowel cleanse or general detoxification program may help relieve some work from the body and may have a beneficial effect on high blood pressure. Papaya aids digestion. Alfalfa is an excellent herb to alkalinise the blood. Flaxseed oil contains essential fatty acids which help in lowering blood pressure. Take 2 tablespoons daily.

Heavy metals can cause cardiovascular problems. Increase excretion of Cadmium and Lead by supplementing with Zinc, Selenium, Calcium and Vitamin C. A hair analysis will show specifically any heavy metal toxicity and specific chelation therapy can then be used to eliminate them. Follow detoxification procedure if exposed to pesticides.

Stress management is an important part of dealing with high blood pressure. Studies on Transcendental Meditation (T.M.) at Harvard Medical School in the mid-seventies showed it to lower oxygen consumption, increase blood flow, and slow heart rate, leading to a deep relaxation. Researchers also found TM to lower levels of blood lactate, which is associated with anxiety, and to decrease blood pressure in people with hypertension. Some form of meditation, or other relaxation techniques i.e. massage, listening to relaxing music or gentle exercise, performed on a regular basis, will go a long way in assisting the reduction of blood pressure. Counselling, mental imagery, and biofeedback may also be useful. Other benefits will also be felt, like a general feeling of calm and an increased ability to deal with stressful situations.

In handling the stresses of life, people can usually be divided into two basic types – Confronters and Avoiders. Confronters face up to life’s problems while Avoiders ignore them hoping they will go away. In an experiment on anxiety induced high blood pressure, a large group of volunteers were given periodic sharp electric shocks at timed intervals. The Confronters in the group watched the clock, braced for the shock, then relaxed again. The Avoiders did not watch the clock, not wanting to know when the shock was coming. As a result, due to their constant tension, the Avoider’s blood pressure was continually an average of 30% higher than the Confronters, all of whose blood pressure remained normal.

Exercise is crucial in the treatment of hypertension. Aerobic exercise will benefit the cardiovascular system and it must be done on a regular basis. If you haven’t exercised before, or are very much out of shape, it is advisable to see a qualified health practitioner who can devise a safe program for you to follow. You can overdo it so be careful! Ideally, you want to build up to doing 20-30 minutes, 3 times a week, as a minimum. You want to be exercising so that you maintain your heart rate at 60% of its maximum. To calculate your maximum heart rate, subtract your age from 220. This is your maximum heart rate. To get 60% of your maximum heart rate, multiply the number by 0.6. This is the heart rate you want to aim for and maintain while exercising aerobically.

The Bach Flower remedies may assist with mental and emotional imbalances. Impatiens is useful for those who are agitated, impatient or easily upset. It is said that astrological FIRE signs (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius) are more prone to heart and high blood pressure problems. Acupuncture, Pulsing and Reflexology may also be helpful for high blood pressure.

Side effects of drug treatment:

Diuretics – Increased risk of mortality due to myocardial infarction or sudden death. Diuretics deplete Potassium, Magnesium, Zinc, and B group vitamins. Some diuretics have an adverse effect on serum lipids, blood glucose and raise glyco-hemoglobin concentration.

Beta Blockers – Similar to diuretics, they cause changes in serum lipid fractions. At least 25% of patients treated with beta blockers will develop a need for antidepressants. They also increase the risk of heart failure, cause weight gain, decreases energy, and sexual dysfunction. Long term use of these drugs are contraindicated. Beta blockers may decrease Coenzyme Q10 levels thus reducing energetics of cardiac cells. Coenzyme Q10 levels also fall, therefore, supplementation is required.

Alpha blockers – Alpha blockers can cause hypertension, dry mouth, constipation, sedation, and dizziness. They are not effective for long term treatment of hypertension.

Methyl dopa, Captopril, Propanolol – Up to 50% of patients taking any of the above drugs experience fatigue or lethargy; 30% had some form of sexual disorder and over 10% had sleep disorders, nightmares, headaches, anxiety, irritability, palpitations, nausea, dry mouth and muscle cramps.

Angiotensin 2 inhibitors – These can affect trace element status in the body. Selenium and Zinc are decreased and Copper rises, with this medication.

Nutritional and Herbal support for High Blood Pressure includes:

Heartcare – Heartcare is a standardized (5:1) leaf and flower extract of hawthorn. Produced by Schwabe and Co of Germany backed with 50 years of research, and subject to 80 scientific clinical studies. Improves blood flow and nutrient supply to the heart.

Garlicin HC – Garlicin with Hawthorn, Cayenne, Rutin and Vitamin E. Supports healthy heart and circulation. Assists to normalize blood pressure and to reduce cholesterol.

Magnesium Complex – Necessary for contraction and relaxation of muscles, including the heart muscle. Magnesium is known as the anti-cramping mineral and is helpful for muscle twitches around the eyes, spasms in the muscles of the arms or legs and cramps in bed at night.

Omega 3 Fish Oils – Salmon oil is one of the best sources of omega 3 fatty acids. The 0mega 3 fatty acids, mainly found in certain seafood, have been clearly shown to offer some protection against heart disease. They help reduce abnormal blood clotting, high cholesterol and blood pressure – all factors which contribute to this condition.

Coenzyme Q10 – Improves the heart-muscle metabolism, enhances immunity, acts as an antioxidant. Taking this supplement may help prevent coronary inefficiency and heart failure.

Some interesting points on High Blood Pressure:

Caution: Any individual who has been treated for by-pass surgery or has coronary blockage should not allow the diastolic blood pressure to fall below 85 mm Hg, as it increases the risk of low perfusion injury, i.e., ischaemic damage to heart and brain tissue. Furthermore, medication for hypertension needs to be restricted at night as the average drop in B.P. with sleep is 30-40 mm Hg, which once again, can compromise perfusion pressure in the elderly.

Reduce weight. Decrease salt and sugar intake and increase intake of Potassium and Magnesium rich foods. High intakes of sugar can raise blood pressure and has an additive effect with high salt intakes. Avoid deep fried foods and food additives. Reduce stress, through yoga. Stress can also produce a craving for salt. Avoid smoking. If cheese is eaten, fresh cheese is preferable to aged cheeses. Reduce or avoid all tea, coffee and alcohol. Avoid use of oral contraceptive. It increases the need for Vitamin B6 and increases the risk of stroke. Avoid the herb licorice (in excess of 3g/day of active form) as it can raise blood pressure.

Treat infections such as Chlamydia. Chronic hypertension can be caused by an infection such as Chlamydia pneumonia. Chlamydia is known to cause inflammation in blood vessels which causes high blood pressure and encourages the formation of plaque. Approximately 1/3 of patients with hypertension have antibodies to this bacterium.

Increase the consumption of oats, as they are rich in Silicon and mucopolysaccharides. Garlic, onions and ginger in cooking should be used often. Eaten on a regular basis, celery is helpful as it promotes the excretion of excess fluids and decreases blood pressure. Potassium-rich foods or supplements should be increased to reduce risk of a stroke i.e. vegetables and fruit. Increase fibre consumption in the form of apples, oat bran, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, whole grains, psyllium husks and green leafy vegetables. Fibre helps bind excess cholesterol which in turn reduces blood viscosity and thus blood pressure. Increase aerobic exercise, swimming, walking, cycling. Do not lift heavy weights. Maintain a high fluid intake – drink at least 6-8 glasses of purified water daily. Identify and eliminate food allergies and sensitivities as they can aggravate hypertension.

For purposes of measuring longevity, the lower diastolic or resting pressure is the most important figure. Listed below are the average number of years lost from a man’s life by disorders brought on by high diastolic blood pressure at age 45.

Diastolic Pressure	Average years lost at age 45

90	3 years

95	6 years

100	12years

If you are taking MAO inhibitors, which are drugs that are used to counter depression, lower blood pressure, and treat infections and cancer, avoid Tyramine. Combining MAO inhibitors with Tyramine causes the blood pressure to soar and could cause a stroke. Avoid the amino acid Tyrosine also.

People who snore heavily are much more likely to have high blood pressure or angina than silent sleepers. Researchers suggest that snorers may suffer from a slight malfunctioning of the part of the brain responsible for fluent breathing; this can put an unnatural strain on the heart and lungs due to oxygen shortage.

Patients with hypertension often suffer apnea, in which they stop breathing. Apnea, which occurs while sleeping, is associated with loud snoring and restless sleep. It is not unusual for the apnoeic patient to feel excessively sleepy during the day. Evaluation and treatment of apnea can help reduce high blood pressure in these patients.

Medicinal parts of ginkgo include dried or fresh leaves and the seeds separated from the fleshy outer layer. The flavono ids and terpenoids of ginkgo extracts are considered antioxidants that serve as free radical scavengers. Other suggested mechanisms of action include arterial vasodilation, increased tissue perfusion, increased cerebral blood flow, decreased arterial spasm, decreased blood viscosity, and decreased platelet aggregation. In Germany, standardized ginkgo extracts are required to contain 22% to 27% ginkgo flavonoids and 5% to 7% terpenoids.

Ginkgo may be effective in the management of cerebral insufficiency, dementia, and circulatory disorders. It’s available as tablets, capsules, and liquid preparations. Common trade names include Bioginkgo, Gincosan, Ginkgo Go!, Ginkgo Liquid Extract Herb, Ginkgo Nut, Ginkgo Power, Ginkgo Capsules, Ginkyo, and Quanterra Mental Sharpness.

Reported uses

Gingko is primarily used to manage cerebral insufficiency, dementia, and circulatory disorders such as intermittent claudication. It’s also used to treat headaches, asthma, colitis, impotence, depression, altitude sickness, tinnitus, cochlear deafness, vertigo, premenstrual syndrome, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and allergies.

Gingko is used as an adjunctive treatment for pancreatic cancer and schizo phrenia. It’s also used in addition to physical therapy for Fontaine stage IIb peripheral arterial disease to decrease pain during ambulation.

Administration

Tablets and capsules: 40 to 80 mg by mouth three times a day

Tincture (1:5 tincture of the crude ginkgo leaf): 0.5 ml by mouth three times a day.

Hazards

Adverse effects of gingko include headache, dizziness, subarachnoid hemorrhage, palpitations, nausea, vomiting, flatulence, diarrhea, and allergic reaction. Administration with anticoagulants, antiplatelets, high-dose vitamin E, and garlic and other herbs that increase bleeding time may increase the risk of bleeding. Ginkgo may potentiate the activity of monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Ginkgo extracts may reverse the sexual dysfunction associated with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

Pregnant or breast-feeding women should avoid use of gingko. Patients with a history of an allergic reaction to ginkgo or any of its components should avoid Use, as should patients with risk factors associated with intracranial hemorrhage hyPertension, diabetes). Patients receiving an antiplatelet or an anticoagulant should avoid use because of the increased rise of bleeding. Gingko should be avoided in the perioperative period and before childbirth.

Safety Risk Gingko has been known to cause GI problems, dizziness, and serious bleeding.

Clinical considerations

Ginkgo extracts are considered standardized if they contain 24% ginkgo flavonoid glycosides and 6% terpene lactones.

Treatment should continue for at least 6 to 8 weeks, but therapy beyond 3 months isn’t recommended.

Monitor patient for possible adverse reactions, such as GI problems, headaches, dizziness, allergic reactions, and serious bleeding.

Toxicity may cause atonia and adynamia.

Advise patient who plans to take gingko for motion sickness to begin taking it 1 to 2 days before beginning the trip and to continue taking it for the duration of his trip.

Inform patient that the therapeutic and toxic components of ginkgo can vary significantly from product to product. Advise him to obtain ginkgo from a reliable source.

Advise patient to keep herb out of reach of children.

Advise patient to discontinue use at least 2 weeks before surgery.

Tell patient to notify pharmacist of any herbal or dietary supplement that he’s taking when obtaining a new prescription.

Advise patient to consult his a health care provider before using an herbal preparation because a conventional treatment with proven efficacy may be available.

Safety Risk

Seizures have been reported in children after ingestion of more than 50 ginkgo seeds.

Research summary

Both oral and intravenous forms of gingko are available in Europe, where it is one of the most widely prescribed medications. Neither form has been approved for medical use in the United States, although ginkgo is sold as a nutritional supplement.

An extract of the leaves has been shown to have pharmacologic activity in the patients with cerebral insufficiency, dementias, circulatory disorders, and bronchoconstriction. The plant is also known for its antioxidant and neuroprotective effects. Ginkgo extract has not been linked with severe adverse effects, but contact with the fleshy fruit pulp can cause allergic dermatitis, similar to the effect of poison ivy. Limited human data is available on teratogenicity.

The principal pathology underlying the occurrence of cardiovascular disease is atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. Initially this process causes blood vessel narrowing but the subsequent rupture of an atheromatous deposit into the lumen of a coronary or cerebral artery usually results in a heart attack or thrombotic stroke respectively.
Although the precise mechanisms associated with [...]

Although the precise mechanisms associated with plaque development have not been fully elucidated some of these processes, and their associated risk factors, are well understood. Central to the atherosclerotic process are two principal factors:

The oxidation and deposition of lipids in the endothelial lining of blood vessels

An insidious inflammatory process that leads to calcification of the atheromatous deposits and the eventual rupture of these plaques into the lumens of blood vessels.

Specific factors known to accelerate atherosclerosis are generally well-known and include smoking, a diet rich in saturated fats, obesity, lack of exercise and a minimal intake of appropriate phytonutrients. Unfortunately the last factor has not really received the attention that it deserves as we are often (quite rightly) too busy eliminating the adverse factors from our diet to focus on the foods that can help to negate many of the environmental risk factors to which we are exposed.

Apart from food-derived substances such as omega-3 fatty acids, other unsaturated fats and dietary fibre there are a number of compounds found in plant foods that are potent inhibitors of atherosclerosis. There are also several categories of phytonutrients that inhibit platelet aggregation – the abnormal clotting process that aggravates thrombus formation in heart attacks and thrombotic strokes.

How spices help prevent cardiovascular disease

Culinary herbs and spices probably contain the widest, most effective cardiovascular-protective compounds of all food categories – their specific actions are summarized here:

Blood pressure control: Garlic, fenugreek

Lower LDL (bad) cholesterol: Caper, coriander, cinnamon, fenugreek, garlic, ginger

Raise HDL (good) cholesterol): Fenugreek

Lower homocysteine levels: Mustard, wasabi, horseradish

Anti-inflammatory: Bay leaf, garlic, ginger, oregano, rosemary, thyme, turmeric

Inhibit platelet aggregation: Clove, ginger, onion, oregano, rosemary, thyme

Eat a variety of heart healthy spices

One can see that the above list includes at least 10 different culinary herbs and spices – some of which have more than one action. That is why it is important to eat as many of them as possible. Many people make the mistake of assuming that, by eating large quantities of a single spice (garlic, quite rightly, is well-known as a heart-friendly spice), they will protect themselves against cardiovascular disease. While this is true up to a point it is far more important to eat a range of spices as their actions often complement one another through the synergistic relationships that often exist between these valuable foods.

To benefit from the cardio-protective effects of herbs and spices we should eat as many of those mentioned in this article as possible. In addition it would be wise for us to include a range of other herbs and spice in our recipes.

Safety note:

Although spices are very safe, if you are planning to substantially increase your intake of these foods and are on medications such as coumadin (warfarin) and others, it is important to check with your health care provider before doing so.

You have had a stroke. Hopefully, you went to the hospital when you developed your symptoms of weakness, numbness, altered speech or visual impairment. Your hospital care enabled you to limit the damaging effects of the loss of circulation to a portion of your brain. You’ve made it through the acute phase of stroke management. Now what?

You will want to obtain the best achievable outcome from the impairments you already have. If you have “motor” impairments (weakness or clumsiness) you can rest assured that randomized, controlled trials — the gold-standard method for determining a treatment’s effectiveness — have shown that physical therapy can improve your level of functioning. If you have speech impairment, then speech therapy might be beneficial, though this has never been proved by means of randomized, controlled trials.

While it is important to focus on rehabilitation following a stroke, there are also other issues to attend to. As a survivor of a stroke you are at increased risk for another.

Researchers at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Columbia University in New York studied 655 people who suffered first ischemic strokes. (Ischemic strokes are due to plugged blood vessels and not bleeds, and comprise 85-90% of all strokes.) Publishing their results in a March 2006 issue of the journal “Neurology,” the investigators found that in the first five years following the stroke there was an 18% likelihood of another. Over the same time period the research subjects also had a 5% likelihood of a heart attack.

Can you improve your odds? Absolutely! The process of using information from the first stroke to help prevent another is called “secondary stroke prevention.” The idea is that if there is something that can and should be done to reduce one’s risk, now is the time to do it. There is no point in waiting for yet another attack to occur before getting started.

A blue-ribbon panel from the American Stroke Association and American Heart Association reviewed the state of knowledge concerning secondary stroke prevention for patients with ischemic strokes and published their results in a March 2006 issue of the journal “Circulation.” They found that use of blood-pressure-lowering medications has a powerful effect in reducing the risk of a second stroke — ranging from 24-43% in better studies — and this benefit might even extend to patients who have normal blood pressure to start with.

If you have diabetes, then it is especially important to control high blood pressure. Using a medication from the groups of drugs known as “angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors” (ACEIs) and “angiotensin receptor blockers” (ARBs) will not only help control blood pressure, but will additionally help protect the kidneys. If you have diabetes, then it is also important to consider use of cholesterol-lowering medication, especially from the class of drugs known as “statins.” Statins can additionally benefit people without diabetes and even those without elevated cholesterol levels. Of course, in diabetes it is also important to keep the blood-sugar levels as close to normal as is humanly possible.

Quitting smoking is also pivotal in preventing another stroke, and it is never too late in the game to benefit from this difficult but important change. Consumption of more than two standard drinks of alcohol per day also increases the risk of stroke and should be avoided. If you are obese, then it is in your best interests to lose weight through a combination of calorie reduction and sensible exercise.

The carotid arteries are a pair of pulsating blood vessels in the front of the neck that carry blood to much of the brain. If your hospital studies showed that a carotid artery is 70-99% narrowed (severe stenosis) and your recent stroke was downstream from this blood vessel, then you are much less likely to have another stroke if you have a surgical clean-out (endarterectomy) by an experienced surgeon whose complication rate is less than 6%. If you have severe narrowing, but because of some medical or surgical problem the surgery is considered too risky, then insertion of a stent into the narrowed artery can serve as a substitute for endarterectomy.

If the carotid artery on the same side of the stroke is 50-69% narrowed (moderate stenosis), then an endarterectomy can be considered, but the benefit of surgery in these circumstances is much less clear-cut. If the narrowing is less than 50% (mild stenosis), then you are better off leaving the artery alone.

The above recommendations are based on studies in people with atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) which is the most common cause of strokes and, for that matter, heart attacks. But not every stroke is caused by atherosclerosis. That’s why medical testing is important in stroke patients — so that treatment can be tailored to individual circumstances.

What about blood-thinners? If you have atrial fibrillation (a specific pattern of irregular heartbeats) then you are at particular risk to have a stroke due to a blood clot being thrown into the circulation from the heart. In this case warfarin (Coumadin) is the blood-thinner of choice. If for some reason the warfarin cannot be tolerated or is considered too risky, then aspirin is a second-best choice.

If your stroke was due to atherosclerosis, then studies support the use of an “anti-platelet” drug. Platelets are the building blocks from which blood clots are made, and anti-platelet drugs interfere with the ability of the platelets to clump together to form a clot. Antiplatelet drugs of first choice include aspirin by itself, aspirin in combination with extended-release dipyridamole (Aggrenox), and clopidogrel (Plavix).

It’s important to realize that patients who address every risk factor for a second stroke are likely to have the best outcome and the lowest chances of another attack. Handling some risk factors and not others is better than doing nothing at all, but in fighting off a second stroke, you want to use every weapon in your arsenal.

Do You Need A Receding Hairline Treatment?

Did you know that the latest estimates show 85 million people (both men and women) are experiencing progressive hair loss? Nobody is immune to losing their hair. Both men and women can suffer from various forms of alopecia (hair loss). Men can have male-pattern baldness, and women can have female-pattern baldness.

Those that are experiencing baldness will notice that their hair continually deteriorates in quality, and becomes thinner. Usually it’s more concentrated in an area, and the thinning and hair loss spreads out from there.

There is a hormone called DHT (dihydrotestosterone), when there is too much of it in the scalp it will cut off blood supply to hair follicles. The longer the hair goes without it’s nutrients (brought in by blood), the more hair loss will be experienced.

Some people turn to prescription drugs or surgery to try and fix their hair loss problems. What they don’t know is that they can be putting their health in danger, and not even get their hair back.

Prescription drugs can be very hard on the body, and among the other ingredients, the active ingredients are linked to harmful side effects. Surgery can cause the scalp to become deformed. There isn’t a lot of skin to work with up there, so anytime the follicles are moved around or something is taken out, the scars are very visible.

The thing to remember is blocking DHT. Since DHT is something that occurs naturally in the body there is a way to treat it without the harsh medical treatments. There are vitamins that contain everything hair needs to be healthy again, and they also block DHT from killing off the hair follicles.

Yahoo! UK News Message Boards – Diet – grapefruit increases risk of blood clots??

Grapefruits are known to prevent various medications working so maybe there is some truth in this story.

What are the potential negative side effects of NSAIDs?

Approximately 10-50% of patients suffer with gastrointestinal issues such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloating, heartburn, and upset stomach. Furthermore, 15% develop ulcers after long-term use.

What is a Cox-1 enzyme?

Cyclooxygenase-1 (Cox-1) is an enzyme that is present at sites of inflammation as well as in the stomach. The Cox-1 enzyme of the stomach produces prostaglandins, chemical messenger. These prostaglandins protect the lining of the stomach from the acids that it contains. When Cox-1 enzymes are inhibited, inflammation is reduced; however, the integrity of the stomach lining is compromised. This reduction to the stomach leads to ulcers and other gastrointestinal issues.

What is a Cox-2 enzyme?

Cyclooxygenase-2 (Cox-2) produces prostaglandins also but solely at the sites of inflammation. Therefore, hindering these enzymes reduces inflammation.

What is a Cox-2 Inhibitor?

Cox-2 inhibitors are a new class of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Because they selectively block the Cox-2 enzyme and not the Cox-1 enzyme, these drugs are uniquely different from traditional NSAIDs.

Why were Cox-2 Inhibitors created?

Cox-2 Inhibitors were created to reduce inflammation without compromising the stomach lining. Therefore, inflammation sufferers will achieve relief without being at risk for ulcers.

What is the danger surrounding Cox-2 Inhibitors? (i.e., Celebrex, Vioxx, and Bextra)

Although in theory Cox-2 Inhibitors are a great solution, they have some definite health considerations you need to know before you take them. Cox-2 inhibitors have been manufactured in one set dosage. The only available dosage is at such a high level there is an extremely high risk for strokes and heart attacks. Without the option for healthcare professionals to individualize prescriptions for their patients, all patients are receiving the same amount regardless of height, weight, sex, medical history etc. The negative risk have been so great, the FDA formed an Advisory Committee consisting of 32 experts who agree that these Cox-2 Inhibitors cause too high a risk for strokes and heart attacks. They recommend that healthcare providers to be very cautious as to which patients they prescribe Cox-2 despite the pharmaceutical companies flashy advertising.

Are there natural alternatives to Cox-2 Inhibitors?

There are many viable natural options available for individuals suffering from inflammatory diseases such as arthritis and overuse type conditions such as tendonitis and bursitis. Specifically, there is an ingredient called Nexrutine offered by Next Pharmaceuticals that works on the Cox 2 enzyme without platelet aggregation or risk of cardiovascular health. Nexrutine taken by itself is a very good natural pain reliever. Optimal Therapeutics produces a Nexrutine ingredient based product called Phosoplex. The product promotes healthy joint function and also helps to alleviate pain and swelling. This cumulative effect allows for the repair of damaged joints. What makes the product so effective? In addition to Nexrutine, Phosoplex contains a synergistic blend of powerful ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid, MSM, Glucosamine, BioCell Collagen II. Overall Phosoplex is as effective as any other natural joint pain reliever on the market today.

Based on current research and recent problems with pharmaceutical pain relieving drugs, natural alternative ingredients like Nexrutine and natural formulas like Phosoplex are the future for safe and effective pain management.

Yaz Pulmonary Embolism Treatment

Yaz pulmonary embolism occurs when solid matter (typically a blood clot) blocks one of the arteries that supplies blood to your lungs. In most diagnosed cases, the clot arrives from another area of your body after traveling through your bloodstream. The blockage prevents your lung tissue from receiving the blood it needs in order to function properly. This can result in permanent damage to the lung.

There are a number of dangerous, lasting side effects of Yaz PE. First, your lungs are tasked with oxygenating blood before it circulates throughout your body. Lung damage can impair this process, thereby preventing a sufficient amount of oxygen from reaching other organs. Second, with PE, your heart is forced to work harder in order to pump blood through the unblocked pulmonary arteries. Excess strain can eventually cause heart failure.

Treatment for Yaz pulmonary embolism varies by the condition’s severity and the danger posed by migrating blood clots (known as emboli). This article will describe the use of blood thinners, thrombolytic therapy, surgery, and preventative measures.

Blood Thinners And Thrombolytic Medications

The immediate goal of treatment is to reduce your symptoms; doctors will often administer oxygen, pain relievers, and blood pressure medications. If your respiratory system is failing, a breathing tube might also be necessary.

Once your symptoms are under control, blood thinners such as warfarin and heparin are given to prevent further clotting. Warfarin is delivered intravenously; heparin is given in pill form. Both are typically prescribed simultaneously, though heparin is stopped once tests indicate warfarin has begun to take effect.

Thrombolytic drugs can be used if you suffer a severe pulmonary embolism that places your life in danger, or is likely to cause extensive lung damage. These drugs are delivered through a catheter, and can dissolve clots. They represent a more aggressive form of treatment than warfarin or heparin (which merely prevent clotting). The drawback is that thrombolytics pose a higher risk of internal bleeding.

Yaz Blood Clot Elimination Through Surgery

If your body is unable to tolerate blood thinners and thrombolytic drugs, your doctor may suggest surgery to remove the offending clots. There are
1000
two main procedures: suction thrombectomy and pulmonary embolectomy.

Suction thrombectomy is a catheter procedure (and hence, less invasive than embolectomy). The catheter is guided to the blockage within your pulmonary artery. Once it arrives, a saline-based solution is injected into the site. The resulting pressure pulls the blood clot toward the catheter’s tip, which breaks the clot apart.

Pulmonary embolectomy is typically used as a last resort for massive PE; the procedure is invasive and dangerous. While a growing number of surgeons are performing it with a catheter, the operation is normally done through thoracotomy. A long incision is made into the chest through which the offending blood clot is extracted.

Measures To Prevent Yaz Pulmonary Embolism

Most cases of Yaz PE are caused by blood clots that migrate from the deep veins of your calves and thighs. The clots break off and travel with your bloodstream through a large vein called the vena cava. This vein leads directly to your heart and lungs.

If you suffer from deep vein thrombosis (DVT), your doctor may suggest installing a metal filter within your vena cava. The filter acts like a net. As emboli travel through the large vein, the filter catches them before they can reach your heart.

Another preventative measure is to wear compression stockings around your lower legs. These stockings apply artificial pressure and thus, stimulate blood flow. It’s worth noting that they will not prevent blood clots from breaking away from the venous walls.

Yaz pulmonary embolism is dangerous. The condition must be treated quickly in order to limit lung damage. If you or someone you love has suffered deep vein thrombosis, PE, stroke, or other serious side effects of using Yaz birth control, seek legal advice you may have important legal rights.

Healthy Eating Myths Shattered
by: Dr. Jamie Fettig

Salt does Not Cause High Blood Pressure. Some things you need to know first to fully understand blood pressure, as well as helping you to understand about many other things in your body: The difference between average and normal.

Average is a mathematical statistic. Don’t let that big M word scare you. All average means is that you add up all the totals you have and divide by the number of totals you added. This gives you an average of the group of numbers.

Normal is what is right for an individual, or what is common or appropriate for each particular person.

What the medical profession does is make the average normal. They measure a bunch of people’s blood pressure, divide the added totals by the number of people they measured, and come up with an average blood pressure. And then they say this is the normal blood pressure for everyone.

I will let you in on a little secret. If you had the blood pressure I have at this exact moment, you would probably pass out. If you had the same blood pressure standing as you did sitting, you would probably pass out. Your blood pressure changes all the time, all day long. Your normal blood pressure needs to be different than everyone else’s. You need the right blood pressure for you at the right time. If you had the average blood pressure all the time, you probably would be dead by now.

So what do you do with this? Take all the numbers the doctors give you with “a grain of salt.” Just because their charts show that you Ashould be@ in this range does not mean you actually should. You are different than everyone else. Your normal might be outside of the range of average that they go by and still be perfectly healthy for you.

So your Ahigh blood pressure@ might very well be normal for you. And if it is actually too high for your normal, salt really has nothing to do with it.

Again the medical profession came up with a theory and never really tested it before they released it as Atruth@ on the world. Someone said that salt attracts water, and blood has water in it. So if you get rid of some of the salt in the blood, then there will be less water in the blood as well. And if there is less volume of blood, the pressure will have to be less. That was their theory and they began telling people to eat less salt thinking it would lower people’s blood pressure. No real tests, no real studies, and yet believed to be true by many.

Here is the real proof it is garbage. Try and find one person whose blood pressure decreased because they quit eating salt. You will be very hard pressed to find one person. Because eating less salt does not lower your blood pressure. Just like a Diuretic, medications that cause you to release more water than your body wants to from your blood through your kidneys, is often prescribed to attempt to help lower blood pressure. And again, I dare you to try and find people who this has helped.

You see, the body is so much smarter than we are. Many more internal factors go into what your blood pressure is than how much water you have in your blood. Your Blood pressure is a function of your blood vessels, the stuff in your blood, the muscles in and around your blood vessels, your heart, and so much more. If you force water out of the body, your body will compensate in other ways to keep your pressure at your unique normal. Your body knows best where your blood pressure should be. And until you change one or some of the internal factors (and medications do not count) your body will do everything in its power to keep things where they are at.

Want something that is free and easy that decreases the blood pressure significantly for many people who actually do it? Drink Water. It often is as simple as that and here is a perfect example of why. Imagine some really thick ketchup and trying to suck it through a straw. Versus if you put a bunch of water in the ketchup and mix it up and suck the ketchup through the straw. Does it take more or less pressure to suck the watered down ketchup through a straw? It takes less pressure. Similar with your blood. If your blood is thick and sludgy because you are dehydrated, your body will increase your pressure to force the blood through the little itty-bitty vessels and capillaries.

Actually, your blood pressure is more than this. And drinking water does so much more than make your blood thinner so it flows through the vessels easier. Whatever the reasons, drinking water often lowers people’s blood pressure.

Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), as well called acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (ANLL), is a rapidly progressive neoplasm resulting from hematopoietic precursors, or myeloid stem tissue, that give rise to granulocytes, monocytes, erythrocytes, and platelets. There’s growing evidence that genetic events occurring early in stem mobile maturation can lead to leukemia. Very first, there’s a lag time of 5-10 years towards the development of leukemia after coverage to known causative agents such as chemotherapy, radiation, and particular solvents.

2nd, many instances of secondary leukemia evolve out of a prolonged “preleukemic phase” manifested like a myelodysplastic syndrome of hypoproduction with abnormal maturation without having precise malignant behavior. Finally, examination of precursor cells at a stage earlier than the malignant expanded clone in a provided kind of leukemia can reveal genetic abnormalities such as monosomy or trisomy of various chromosomes. In maintaining using the general molecular theme of neoplasia, extra genetic modifications are witnessed in the malignant clone compared with the morphologically normal stem cell that developmentally precedes it.

Acute myelocytic leukemias are classified by morphology and cytochemical staining. Auer rods are crystalline cytoplasmic inclusion bodies characteristic of, though not uniformly witnessed in, all myeloid leukemias. In contrast to mature myeloid tissue, leukemic cells have large immature nuclei with open chromatin and prominent nucleoli. The look from the individual kinds of AML mirrors the cell kind from which they derive. M1 leukemias originate from early myeloid precursors with no apparent maturation toward any terminal myeloid mobile type. This really is apparent within the lack of granules or other features that mark more mature myeloid cells. M3 leukemias are a neoplasm of promyelocytes, precursors of granulocytes, and M3 cells exhibit abundant azurophilic granules which are common of normal promyelocytes.

M4 leukemias arise from myeloid precursors that may differentiate into granulocytes or monocytes, whereas M5 leukemias derive from precursors currently committed towards the monocyte lineage. Therefore, M4 and M5 cells both include the feature folded nucleus and gray cytoplasm of monocytes, whereas M4 cells include also granules of the granulocytic cytochemical staining pattern. M6 and M7 leukemias can’t be readily identified on morphologic grounds, but immunostaining for erythrocytic proteins is positive in M6 tissue, and staining for platelet glycoproteins is apparent in M7 tissue.

Chromosomal deletions, duplications, and well balanced translocations had been noted about the leukemic tissue of some patients prior to the introduction of molecular genetic techniques. Cloning from the regions exactly where well balanced translocations occur has, in some cases, revealed a preserved translocation website that reproducibly fuses a single gene with an additional, producing in the manufacturing of a brand new blend protein. M3 leukemias show a really higher frequency of the t(15;17) translocation that juxtaposes the PML gene with the RAR- gene. RAR- encodes a retinoic acid steroid hormone receptor, and PML encodes a transcription factor whose target genes are unknown. The blend protein possesses novel biologic action that presumably results in improved proliferation and a obstruct of differentiation.

Interestingly, retinoic acid can induce a short-term remission of M3 leukemia, supporting the importance of the RAR–PML blend protein. Monosomy of chromosome seven can be observed in leukemias arising out from the preleukemic syndrome of myelodysplasia or in de novo leukemias, and in both instances this finding is associated with a worse clinical prognosis. This monosomy as well as other serial cytogenetic modifications may also be seen right after relapse of treated leukemia, a scenario characterized by a a lot more aggressive program and resistance to therapy.

As hematopoietic neoplasms, acute leukemias involve the bone marrow and usually manifest abnormal circulating leukemic (blast) cells. Occasionally, extramedullary leukemic infiltrates recognized as chloromas can be observed in other organs and mucosal surfaces. A marked improve within the number of circulating blasts can sometimes trigger vascular obstruction associated with hemorrhage and infarction within the cerebral and pulmonary vascular beds. This leukostasis results in symptoms such as strokes, retinal vein occlusion, and pulmonary infarction.

In most instances of AML along with other leukemias, peripheral blood counts of mature granulocytes, erythrocytes, and platelets are decreased. This is probably because of crowding from the bone marrow by blast tissue as nicely as the elaboration of inhibitory substances by leukemic cells or alteration of the bone marrow stromal microenvironment and cytokine milieu required for normal hematopoiesis. Susceptibility to infections consequently of depressed granulocyte amount and function and abnormal bleeding as a result of reduced platelet counts are common problems in sufferers initially presenting with leukemia.

Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is an indolent leukemia manifested by an increased quantity of immature granulocytes in the marrow and peripheral circulation. One of the hallmarks of CML may be the Philadelphia chromosome, a cytogenetic function that is due to balanced translocation of chromosomes 9 and 22, producing in a fusion gene, bcr-abl, that encodes a kinase that phosphorylates a number of key proteins included in cell development and apoptosis. The fusion gene can recreate a CML-like syndrome when released into mice.

CML eventually transforms into acute leukemia (blast crisis), which is associated with further cytogenetic changes and a clinical course similar to that of acute leukemia. New courses of medicines that block the bcr-abl kinase by competing with the ATP-binding site, induce remissions in most patients in chronic phases of CML. Moreover, resistance to these bcr-abl inhibitors can include amplification from the bcr-abl breakpoint as nicely as the development (or clonal expansion) of mutations in the ATP-binding pocket of bcr-abl, which no longer allows binding of inhibitors.

Herb and spice consumption could well play a significant role in the prevention of heart attacks and strokes according to scientists at the Central Food Technological Research Institute in India.

Writing in the July 2009 edition of the journal, Prostaglandins Leukot Essent Fatty Acids the scientists describe how they tested the anti-clotting properties of several compounds found in a number of well-known spices.

Best anti-clotting spices

In this laboratory-based experiment, the researches tested different spice compounds to see how effective they were in preventing abnormal platelet aggregation (platelet stickiness). The substances they found that were most effective in inhibiting clotting were eugenol (found mainly in clove and allspice) capsaicin (found mainly in chiliesand red peppers), piperine (from black pepper), curcumin (from turmeric), cinnamaldehyde (from cinnamon), quercetin (onions, garlic, chilies) and allyl sulphide (garlic).

The dangers of inappropriate blood clotting

Platelets are the blood cells that are responsible for initiating clotting when we are injured. Although this is an essential component of survival physiology it can work against us when we have a heart attack or thrombotic stroke. If one of these unfortunate incidents takes place, platelets initiate thrombus formation by accumulating in the arteries where the initial cardiac or cerebral event begins.

If unchecked, platelet aggregation results in the formation of a thrombus that completely blocks the artery concerned. This type of clot formation is the cause of a heart attack or thrombotic stroke and is the reason why high risk patients are usually advised to take low dose aspirin or similar drugs. Apart from their preventive properties these agents can actually stop a thrombus from developing during the early stage of a heart attack – the reason why aspirin is the first drug that is given to a conscious patient who is having a heart attack.

Clove compound better than aspirin

While aspirin may still be the drug of choice when it comes to preventing heart attacks and strokes, this research shows that spices are the FOODS of choice in this regard. The authors of the study found that eugenol was the strongest of the anti-clotting spice-derived compounds and that it was far more effective than aspirin in preventing platelet aggregation.

The problem with aspirin is that it has a major side effect – intestinal bleeding. Eugenol extract in large doses can be toxic but it is safe when used as part of its mother spice in quantities called for in normal recipes.

Although scientists are not suggesting that either capsaicin or eugenol (or their parent spices) should replace aspirin as anti-clotting agents, this valuable piece of research has now uncovered yet more health promoting attributes of a number of spice-based compounds.

Apart from eugenol, spices contain a number of other phytonutrients that have anti-clotting activity. And there are many other studies to show that, when eaten as part of a healthy diet, herbs and spices play an important role in protecting us from sticky platelets and the other pathological processes that underlie cardiovascular disease.

Vitamins and Interactions
by: Bob Benson

Vitamins are good for you, so it stands to reason that getting all the vitamins you can everyday is the best course of action. As a general rule, it’s true that choosing foods rich in vitamins is a good idea. But there are times when more isn’t better, even when it comes to vitamins.

The first thing to keep in mind is that several vitamins have toxic levels. In other words, there is a point at which consuming more vitamins is not only unhelpful, it can be dangerous.

Vitamin K helps the body clot blood. If you get a cut, your blood’s natural tendency to clot will keep you from bleeding to death. But there are some people who have blood that clots too readily, or who have health issues that require thinner blood. Some people with specific types of heart problems may actually be on medication designed to thin the blood. Doctors may also prescribe a blood thinner for a patient getting ready for some types of surgeries. If thinning the blood is your doctor’s goal, taking a Vitamin K supplement or eating foods that are particularly rich in Vitamin K may be dangerous.

If you’re taking an aspirin each day, your body may be experiencing a Vitamin C deficiency. Studies have indicated that Vitamin C is typically absorbed by blood cells, but aspirin in the system may block this normal absorption action.

If you need more iron in your body, you may want to consider increasing the amount of Vitamin C in your daily food intake. It seems that having enough Vitamin C in your system makes your body more readily absorb iron, tackling that anemia problem more quickly than taking iron alone.

If you’re taking antibiotics, particularly over a long period of time, your body may have trouble absorbing sufficient amounts of Vitamin A. If you’re taking drugs to lower your cholesterol, you may also experience Vitamin A deficiency.

Vitamin E and Zinc work hand-in-hand. If your body has lower-than-normal levels of Zinc, you may also have a Vitamin E deficiency, even if you’re eating healthy. Vitamins C and E also work together.

There are a number of other interactions that can occur between vitamins, or between vitamins and other conditions, minerals and drugs. Remember that it is possible to overdose on some vitamins, and some can cause serious problems with medication, diet and existing health problems. It’s best to talk to a health care professional before you start or alter your daily diet or vitamin intake.

As an herbalist, I am all for the use of supplements. If I weren’t I’d be out of a job I love. However, it is very easy to go overboard, especially if you aren’t sure what you’re taking. If you can’t find or afford consulting a qualified herbal practitioner, you may want to do some research about the ones you wish to take.

A recent news story gives an example of this problem. If you routinely take ten to one hundred times the RDA of many antioxidants, you may putting yourself at risk for cancer. Overdosing on fat soluble vitamins is easier to do than water soluble, but both can create life altering problems.

If you take herbal supplements, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, herbs can and do interact with each other, with other supplements and with medications. To be safe, ask your doctor or pharmacist if there is any chance that the other things you are taking.

Some supplements can’t be used by everyone. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid most herbs unless the doctor oks them. Besides the obvious danger of harming the child, some can cause uterine contractions. That could cause miscarriage or premature birth.

People with auto-immune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus must also be careful. Plants like echinacea can interfere with medications or make the illness worse. Those with high blood pressure need to avoid herbs such as licorice and rosemary, as both herbs can raise blood pressure.

Children also need special attention when looking at supplements. Some herbs and even aromatherapy oils may not be safe for them. As an example, children under two should not be exposed to peppermint or eucalyptus oils. Eucalyptus can’t be used on or given anything with eucalyptus, including cough drops.

As further examples, I’ve selected four very popular herbal supplements, to show you what to look for. As more studies are done, more precautions and interactions may be added to the list.

Black Cohosh: It’s been used by women going through menopause for ages, but it does pose some risks. If you have or are at risk for hormone related problems including cancers, it’s best to avoid it totally. Boys should not take it, as it can cause problems in their developing reproductive organs, and it could harm the liver. Do not take it while pregnant or breastfeeding.

Cayenne: Food amounts are probably safe for most people, however lactating women may want to avoid it as it could colic the child. Supplements should be avoided if you take ACE inhibitors, stomach acid reducers, aspirin, blood thinners, anti-platelet medications or some asthma medications.

Echinacea: People use this herb to help boost the immune system. That means that if you have an auto-immune disorder or take medications that affect the immune system, you should avoid it. If you have TB, leukemia, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, HIV, AIDS or liver problems, don’t take it. Some antifungal medications will also interact.

Garlic: Those taking blood thinners, anti-platelet medications or protease inhibitors should consult the doctor before taking garlic supplements. Raw garlic is a stomach irritant, so use caution if you have any sort of stomach problem, including ulcers or Cronn’s disease.

There are five key ingredients to the Mediterranean Diet:

Olive Oil

Its delicate taste has made it a foodie favorite and it is indispensable to most Italian and Spanish dishes. Olive oil is far better than butter for the heart because it is rich in mono-unsaturates, a type of fatty acid thought to help protect against heart disease by reducing high density lipoprotein concentrations in the blood. Olive oil contains the same amount of calories as other oils, so excess could lead to weight gain.

Garlic

Its distinctive flavor adds that special something to the most basic sauce, and a Latin flavor to the breath. But the hidden benefits are great. Regular consumption protects against heart disease by decreasing the level of cholesterol in the blood and lowering blood pressure. Cooking garlic removes most of the smell.

Oily Fish

Tuna, swordfish and salmon are generally holiday treats, but if they replaced red meat in our everyday diet we would be slimmer and healthier. The health benefits are well-documented. Fish oil contains essential fatty acids which reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering levels of ‘bad’ cholesterol.

Fruit and Vegetables

Mediterranean vegetables may be common to us, but are prepared and served imaginatively to bring out the flavors and textures. The World Health Organization recommends we eat 400g of fruit and vegetables a day – about five pieces. Eating this amount is both filling and a source of vital nutrients, especially antioxidant vitamins which may protect against some cancers.

Red Wine

Few diets allow the luxury of a drink; our diet encourages it. The benefits speak for themselves. The French drink ten times more than their American counterparts, and there are no prizes for guessing which nation is fatter and more prone to heart disease. Red wine contains flavonoids which attack heart disease from two fronts, as antioxidants and platelet inhibitors. Wine contains high levels of natural aspirin, and in France is still sometimes prescribed as a diuretic and a source of minerals. It is also thought to play a role in killing bacteria. But most importantly, a glass of red wine is delicious, relaxing and highly Continental.
